چکیده

• When aortic and mitral valvular insufficiency are present in the same patient, indicator injected into the aortic root regurgitates into the left ventricle and thence into the left atrium. The purpose of this paper is to describe the indicator distribution in such patients and to compare the relationships found with those predicted from a theoretical model of bivalvular insufficiency. Indicator distribution across a single incompetent valve may be extrapolated to the case of two incompetent valves in series. Using the fundamental relationship: flow X concentration X time = units of indicator moved, the ratios of the areas of indicator dilution curves that will be inscribed in the several chambers after injection into the aortic root can be derived. It has been shown for two chambers when indicator is introduced into the chamber immediately distal to the regurgitant valve:

The use of invasive techniques, angiography and indicator dilution, for quantification of valvular regurgitations.

Angiographic techniques have been used for the quantification of mitral or aortic and rarely tricuspid regurgitation. Mitral or aortic regurgitant volume per beat and the regurgitation fraction (fao and fm, respectively) are obtained from the angiographic determination of total left ventricular stroke volume (TSV) and forward stroke volume (FSV) estimated by a different technique. Although this...

Calculation of Cardiac Output from Indicator - Dilution Curves in the Presence of Mitral

M EIER and Zierlerl have lucidly presented the theory underlying the application of indicator dilution of the measurement of flow in the vascular bed. This theory is not violated by the presence of valve incompetence provided that indicator particles that recirculate and reenter the vascular system can be excluded from the primary indicator concentration-time curve. Valve incompetence results i...

Imaging of flow: basic principles

Indicator dilution techniques for measuring blood flow have existed for more than 100 years. Indicators may be either intravascular, or freely diffusible. Early techniques establishing the mathematical framework for flow (the Fick principle, Kety–Schmidt method, and central volume principle) were mainly based on arterial and venous blood sampling. Tissue perfusion measured by MR techniques may ...
